My donations could fund...

101 hours with a nurse on our support line

48 hours of early diagnosis research

I’m fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK

WALK COMPLETED! SEE UPDATE BELOW

Alexandra and I are planning to walk from our house to the top of Crickley Hill in Gloucestershire on 15th July  - while I am undergoing chemotherapy. The distance is about 4 miles but it's quite steep and by that point I will be contending with fatigue and the other myriad side effects of chemo so it will be quite a challenge.  We are doing this as I am (relatively) well and strong 6 months after diagnosis  - which puts me in the minority -  more than half of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within 3 months.

We are taking part in The Big Step Forward to transform the future for everyone affected by this horrible disease to give them the chance of a better future. Please help us :-)

The funds we raise will enable Pancreatic Cancer UK’s nurses to continue to be there for those affected by pancreatic cancer now and fund research to detect early, treat better and transform care.

The money you donate will have the power to make that possible. Thank you.

PS: Why the gold sequins? The Japanese have an art-form called Kintsugi whereby broken ceramics are repaired and the joins are painted with gold lacquer thus illustrating that things can be slightly broken but still beautiful. My brilliant wife had the idea that we could apply this philosophy to scars on our body. While I did not relish the idea of walking bare-chested apart from gold-paint, we compromised with gold sequins on my T-shirt which follow the line of my surgery scar. As yet Mrs B. remains flawless. Alas, she gets NO sequins!

My Updates

Walk completed!!!!!!!

Unfortunately we weren’t able to do our walk on 15th July since I hadn’t responded well to my most recent chemo cycle and instead I spent a ‘delightful’ few days on an antibiotic drip in hopsital.

Luckily I was feeling fit a few days later and with the vague promise of good weather, Mrs B and I decided to make our ascent of Crickley Hill on the Cotswold edge last Friday. It was everything a good walk should be and with each step, the last 6 months of illness and treatment seemed to contract as the beautiful surroundings helped me feel more and more like ‘the old me’.

On our way home we bumped into a couple of people who had first hand experience of this illness; they encouraged us and said very nice things about how well I had done  - always nice ?.

To quote someone who travelled significantly higher than us – for many this might have been a few small steps, but for me it was a giant leap – towards blue skies, towards recovery and towards a healthy future. Thank you to everyone who helped me get to this point.

Thank you to my Sponsors
