How will the funds I raise support Pancreatic Cancer UK?

The funds raised through the Big Step Forward will help to fund research breakthroughs – our research funding will support the development of a simple test to diagnose pancreatic cancer earlier. This means people will be diagnosed earlier and could enable them to have surgery, the one potentially life-saving treatment they are currently often too late for. This test is within reach and could be saving lives as soon as 2024.

As well as supporting research, your fundraising could help fund our services. Our specialist nurses are needed now more than ever, to give people practical information and emotional support, and to help ease the burden for our colleagues in the NHS. We’re determined to do everything we can to support people with pancreatic cancer through this difficult time and beyond.

The Big Step Forward app

How does The Big Step Forward app work?

1. Download the Big Step Forward app from Google Play or the App Store, depending on your device.

2. Log in with your Big Step Forward registration email and password.

3. Complete a training walk during the training period to get a feel for the app (you can do as many training walks as you wish from 24th June - 15th July).

4. On Saturday 16th July, click "Start" in the "Walk" section of the app to begin your Big Step Forward walk.

5. Take the Big Step Forward at your own pace. You can stop and start your walk as many times as you like.

6. Share your activity to your feed with photos from your walk, and comment on other posts in the feed, to support other walkers.

I’ve completed my walk but the badge on my fundraising page hasn’t lit up?

Oh no! Please email us at TheBigStepForward@Pancreaticcancer.org.uk and we can sort that for you.

How long do I have to record my walk?

Training Mode will be available from 24th June - 15th July.

Utilise this time to go for a test walk, and get a feel for the app.

You can complete unlimited activities of any distance during Training Mode, but all walkers distances will be refreshed to start from 0 on event day, Saturday 16th July.

Event mode will begin on Saturday 16th July from 00:01am BST, and will end on 31st July at 11:59pm BST, so if you are not walking on 16th July (virtual event day) you will have a further two weeks to complete your walk and track it in the app.

You can start and stop your walk as many times as you would like to. You might want to break up your walk into a few sections throughout the day.

What is Training Mode?

Training mode allows you to test the app before event day. You can log multiple activities of any distance or speed, sharing these to the event feed or within your team feed. We highly encourage all runners to carry out at least one test walk to familarise yourself with the app, ahead of event day.

What is Event Mode?

Event mode will run from 16th July until 31st July, in which you have time to complete your Big Step Forward walk.

You can track your Big Step Forward walk using the built in app tracker to access exclusive content in the 'Feed' throughout the event day (16th July).

Complete your walk, submit your time to the event leader boards and share your success and comments with other walkers via the event feed.

How do the Teams work?

Walkers who have already joined a team when they registered on The Big Step Forward microsite, will automatically have access to the 'Team' section of the 'Feed' in the app.

You can interact with team members via the team feed and help your team top the distance, by tracking all of your miles.

You can't create a new team or join an existing team, within the app. This has to be done through The Big Step Forward site, when you register for the walk.

Do I need to take my phone with me on my walk during the event?

For the app to track your walking distance, you will need to take your phone with you.

Open the app and press "Start" when you you are ready to begin your activity.

The phone can be locked and put in your pocket during the walk, but you must ensure your location settings for the app are ON and set to "always allow".

When you have reached the distance you want to get to, you can press 'Stop' and your tracker will end your activity.

How do I post my walk to the app feed?

When you complete an activity, you will be prompted to share your activity to the feed. Add a caption and upload photos from your walk, and then share to the feed so the rest of the participants can like and comment.

You don't have to share it to the feed though, and you can just keep this activity saved and only viewable by you.

How do the leaderboards work?

There are 3 areas where you can see leaderboards and stats for the event.

Go to the LEADERBOARD tab, where you will see two leaderboards:

1. Individual - See which individuals have clocked up the most KMs!

2. Team - See which teams have clocked up the most KMs!

3. Fundraising leaderboard - go to the MORE tab, and click on the 'Fundraisng Leaderboard' tab to see the Top 10 teams and Top 10 individuals.

Can I complete my walk in parts?

Yes, you can start and stop your walk as many times as you like. Just remember that all of the walks and KMs you walk, which you complete during the training mode, will be start from fresh on '0' again, from 16th July, when Event mode kicks in.

What do I need to participate in the event?

Ensure you have a smartphone with the latest version of The Big Step Forward app. Please note, the app requires a minimum software of IOS 12 or Android 8.

Ensure your phone is fully charged.

Ensure your phone is NOT on low power mode.

Ensure your GPS/location is turned on.

Ensure your location settings for the app are on, and set to "always allow" to ensure your location can accurately track during your activity.

My app crashed / my app is frozen. What should I do?

First, try closing down your app and restarting it. This should take you back to the map view, or back into your current activity.

If you are still having issues, uninstall the app, and reinstall the latest version of the app directly from the App Store or Google Play.

I can't sign into the app because of an error. What should I do?

We're sorry you're receiving an error message when trying to sign into the app. We recommend that you use an app like Strava instead to track your walk. You can then screenshot your activity and add it to your fundraising page or share it with friends and family.

Can I run other tracking apps at the same time as The Big Step Forward app?

Yes, you can, however your activity must be tracked in The Big Step Forward app to be counted in the distance leaderboard. We also don't recommend using more than one tracking app at one time, because this can cause your battery to drain quickly, or your phone to crash.

My location is not tracking in the app. What should I do?

You must ensure your location settings for the app are ON and set to "always allow." Click the "Location Settings" button in the MORE tab to check on this.

Can I create my own team?

No, not within the app. These teams have been preallocated when you registered for the event on The Big Step Forward website, and no additional teams can be set up within the app.

Who can see my team feed?

Only members of your team can see your team's feed. You can see the full list of walkers in your team by clicking TEAM MEMBERS in the teams section of your app.

What if I have more questions about the app or event?
